George Zimmerman is still attempting to get off for killing Trayvon Martin. His defense lawyers may attempt to combine his “Stand Your Ground” hearing with his trial date. I think this would be a huge mistake on the part of the court to allow this to happen. How can Zimmerman stand trial for second degree murder, and have a hearing on his ability to use the Stand Your Ground statute as his defense for trial all at the same time? This would seem to open the door for Zimmerman to have grounds for an appeal. Right now, the “Stand Your Ground” hearing is scheduled for April 22. Stay tuned! It’s about to get good 🙂 Will the court decided to allow Zimmerman to use Stand Your Ground as a defense? What do you think?
Trayvon Martin: The Latest, Week 51
Monday, Feb. 18, 11:14 a.m. EST: George Zimmerman‘s defense considers requesting to combine his trial and “Stand your ground” hearing: With two major court dates on the horizon for Zimmerman’s second-degree-murder case, defense attorney Mark O’Mara has suggested that his team may ultimately ask for the trial and “Stand your ground” hearing to be combined, the Orlando Sentinel reports. With the hearing scheduled for April 22 and, depending on the outcome, a trial on June 10, O’Mara said his team is crunched for time. He is concerned because the judge has made it clear that she will not grant a continuance “unless there are extenuating, extraordinary circumstances.” To observers, O’Mara and other attorneys told the Sentinel, a combination hearing-trial would likely look a lot like a normal trial: A jury would be selected, and the state and defense would present their cases. But the jury would be placed in limbo while the defense tries to convince the judge to end the case herself.
Trayvon Martin: The Latest, Week 50
Thursday, Feb. 14, 1:39 a.m. EST: When is George Zimmerman’s “Stand your ground” hearing actually happening? We’ll find out soon. The judge presiding over his trial is holding a hearing today in Sanford, Fla., to discuss jury selection. Lead defense attorney Mark O’Mara says in a motion that he wants to discuss the process for what he expects will be an “extended” jury selection, the Huffington Post reports. He also asked to nail down the scheduling of the hearing on Zimmerman’s “Stand your ground” defense.
Tuesday, Feb. 12, 3:49 p.m. EST: Forensic evidence both supports and casts doubt on Zimmerman’s claims: The evidence supports Zimmerman’s claims that Trayvon Martin was leaning over him when he fired his gun, but it casts doubt on the former neighborhood-watch captain’s timeline on the night he shot and killed the unarmed teen nearly a year ago, according to a review by Tony Pipitone for WKMG Local 6 Orlando News, the Orlando Sentinel reports. The timeline hurts Zimmerman’s credibility, Pipitone said, if people want to believe that he was walking to his truck and was attacked by Trayvon. “So much time is unaccounted for that would allow him to get back to the truck,” Pipitone said. Legal analyst Luis Calderon indicates that the timeline shows that Trayvon had “plenty of time” to return home and “it’s obvious something made him stay there.”
Monday, Feb. 11, 11:45 a.m. EST: Jamie Foxx joins Trayvon Martin’s parents for peace walk: On Saturday, actor Jamie Foxx joined Trayvon Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, in Miami for a Day of Remembrance Peace Walk in honor of the Florida teen, who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman nearly a year ago. “The thing is, with press, and you know how press goes, it will be a hot story at one point. It will be the thing to go to, and all of a sudden, they try to forget about it,” Foxx said, the Huffington Post reports. “And I said I don’t want anybody to forget about this, because they can’t forget about the fact that they lost their son.”
